Civil Engineering (CE)
Overview
Civil Engineers design, build and maintain the broad range of infrastructure required to support our society. Focus areas include structures, transportation systems, potable water distribution systems, wastewater systems, stormwater systems, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, and construction management/support.
Civil Engineering Interns get hands-on experience in both municipal agency and consulting firm settings. They will develop technical skills which can range from sophisticated computer modeling, to design work and drafting, to real world construction and project management. Interns will also further develop writing and speaking skills to communicate with the public, project clients, contractors, and peers. The key goal is to allow the Civil Engineering intern to meld the theoretical and technical skills from school with practical real-world conditions and issues.

Internship Timeframes
The following timeframes have been laid out by our participating universities for when an internship should be offered. These timeframes have been structured to allow students to participate in the program and not fall behind on their upper-division coursework schedule beyond the terms that internships overlap.
Oregon State University
- Junior Year: Spring-Summer Internship
- Senior Year: Summer-Fall Internship
Oregon Tech
- Junior Year: Spring-Summer Internship
- Senior Year: Summer-Fall Internship
Portland State University

Coursework Requirements
Each participating university discipline has a set of required courses that must be taken to stay on schedule for program participation. These requirements are optimized to provide the necessary skills to participate in MECOP's internships while minimizing the amount of time added to receiving a degree. If you are a student and want to discuss your current academic qualifications and to plan out your curriculum for participation, please see our directory of advisors.
