MECOP, Inc. proudly continued its outreach efforts by participating in the MESA Day event, held at Portland State University on May 17th. MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement), which has been empowering students for over 35 years, once again hosted its annual state competition for the MESA Schools Program. This event provides a platform for underrepresented students in the STEM fields to showcase their talents and achievements.
The mission of MESA is to equip students underrepresented in the STEM fields with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to develop their talents, explore technology-based careers, enter college, and compete successfully in the workplace. Underrepresented students include students of color, girls, non-binary students, and students from low-income backgrounds.
MESA Day is the highlight of the year for the MESA Schools Program with students traveling to present and demonstrate the projects developed throughout the school year, meet STEM professionals, visit college booths, and participate in various activities. This event not only showcases their projects but also fosters a community of support and encouragement for future STEM professionals.
MECOP's presence at the event provides students with a glimpse of the opportunities available to them in college, helping them start planning their academic and professional futures early. Dustin Scott, MECOP's Director of Operations and Events, shared his enthusiasm:
We at MECOP were thrilled to participate in the 2024 MESA Day event! Engaging with enthusiastic middle and high school students from over 20 local schools was truly inspiring. Our focus was on motivating them to seek hands-on experiences, which we believe are crucial in guiding their future career choices. These practical experiences will be instrumental in shaping their paths and decisions for years to come!
